Nobel Peace Prize Awarded to Belarusian Human Rights Activists and Russia-Ukraine Organizations
1. Ales Bialiatski
He was one of the initiators of the democratic movement that an emerged in the Belarus in the mid-1980s. He dedicated his life to promoting democracy and the peaceful development in his country. He founded Viasna (Spring) Institute in 1996. Viasna grew into a human rights organization that raised its voice against atrocities on political prisoners.
2. Memorial
The Human Rights Organization Memorial was founded in 1987 by human rights activists in the former Soviet Union. Its purpose was to ensure that the victims of the communist regime's oppression were never forgotten. During the Chechen wars, the memorial informed the world about the atrocities and war crimes committed by Russia and pro-Russian forces.
3. The Center for Civil
Liberties The Civil Liberties Center was established with the aim of strengthening human rights and democracy in Ukraine. It took a stance on strengthening Ukrainian civil society and putting pressure on the authorities to make Ukraine a full democracy. Since Russia's military crackdown on Ukraine in February 2022, the organization has worked tirelessly to identify and document Russian war crimes against the Ukrainian population. The organization is playing a leading role in holding guilty parties accountable for their crimes.
